I have not made it 21
days. It is TOUGH! I have gotten up to 16 days
but have to keep starting over,
HOWEVER you don't have to get 21 days to
discover how much you change--in fact--you get
so it is difficult to be around those who
complain or whine all the time, and it becomes
more noticeable.
It's funny what happens when you are talking
with someone who is complaining and you don't
join in and respond. They keep pitching the
complaint using different wording trying to get
you to join them. When you don't, they sort of
just walk away, looking
confused....laughing....I have to say though, I
think it has made me less irritated when things
don't meet my expectations. I think it is
because I am searching for words and thoughts
that wouldn't be considered as complaining,
(like sarcasm--my personal favorite :-) and in
so doing, I have become what I think is more
tolerant.
My whole family has tried it. The first few days, we
had to quit talking, because moving our
bracelets and starting over was too irritating.
Since July, when we started, one has quit and
decided he wants to complain when he needs too;
one has decided that it can't be done and two of
us are still chipping away, day by day trying to
make it.

background and other information.

A while back, I was playing
racquetball with a friend. Catching
our breath between games, he asked,
“So how many purple bracelets have
you sent out?” “About 125,000,” I
responded; and then added, “so far.”
Taking a moment
for that to sink in, he sipped his
water and said, “125,000…that’s more
than the population of a good-sized
American city.” “Yeah,” I said still
trying to wrap my head around it
all. “And how long have you been at
it?” he asked. “Seven months,” I
replied.
“125,000 purple bracelets in seven
months,” he repeated shaking his
head in disbelief.
Adjusting his sweat bands and
replacing his goggles for our final
game of the day, my friend asked,
“how many times a day do you think
people complain?” “I dunno,” I said,
“all I know is that when I first
started trying to go 21 days without
complaining I was moving my own
bracelet about 20 times a day.” He
stood indicating he was ready to
continue playing. Grabbing his
racquet and giving it a few swings
to keep his shoulder limber, he
said, “do the math.” Wondering if
somehow I’d miscalculated the score
of our last game I asked, “What
math?”
“If you multiply 125,000 bracelets,” he said,
“times 20 complaints per day, times
7 months at 30 days each month you
get…well, its…well it’s a heck of a
lot! Think how many complaints have
NOT been made since this began.” I
stood a moment thinking about this
and then walked on the racquetball
court.
He entered the court, approached the serving line
and launched one of his “death in a
corner” serves. My mind was
preoccupied by his comment. I fanned
the ball. I just couldn’t stop
thinking about what my friend had
said and, ultimately, he won the
game. How much complaining,
criticism and gossip had this simple
idea helped prevent?

“It is a waste of time to be angry about
my disability. One has to get on with
